Responsible gambling

This site writes about betting and casino games, so it owes you a straight account of how they work.

The maths is not neutral

Every price contains a margin. Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a betting market and the total comes to more than 100% — you can do this yourself with our odds converter. That surplus is the bookmaker’s edge, and it applies whichever outcome wins. Casino games work the same way through the house edge, and a slot’s advertised return-to-player figure is a long-run average measured over millions of spins, not a promise about your session.

The practical consequence: the longer you play, the closer your results move to the margin. No staking plan, “infallible trick” or system changes that, because none of them change the price.

Signs worth taking seriously

  • Betting more than you decided to, or more often than you meant to.
  • Chasing losses — increasing stakes to get back to level.
  • Gambling with money meant for something else, or with borrowed money.
  • Hiding how much you play from people close to you.
  • Playing to change how you feel rather than for entertainment.

Practical steps

  • Set a loss limit before you start, in money and in time, and treat it as spent.
  • Use the operator’s own limits. Licensed sites must offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion; they take effect immediately.
  • Self-exclude across operators. Spain has a national register (RGIAJ); Colombia and Peru operate exclusion through Coljuegos and MINCETUR-licensed operators.
  • Do not gamble to solve a money problem. It is the most expensive way to try.
